Development Thomas Vuerinckx takes fifth place after hectic race on Dutch soil
Racing on Dutch soil is known for its chaos and unpredictability, and this edition was no exception. In the 76th VDL Groep Omloop der Kempen, our devo riders had to cover 180 kilometers on a varied course with plenty of cobbled sections. “Before the race, we agreed to go all-in for Liam Van Bylen in the sprint,” said Vuerinckx. “But with all the cobbles, we saw an opportunity to make a difference there. So we pushed hard as a team on the first cobbled section, but the peloton didn’t split.”
There were a few breakaway attempts, but none of them stuck, and the race ultimately ended in a bunch sprint. “As we entered the final local lap, it got really hectic. Everyone wanted to be at the front. Liam was on my wheel, but we both crashed. I was able to continue, but Liam wasn’t. So from that point on, I became the designated sprinter.”
“Because of the crash, I was all the way at the back, but in the final six kilometers, I managed to move up. Thibaut Bernard delivered a perfect lead-out. Unfortunately, I hit the front with 300 meters to go and had to start my sprint early. That allowed four riders to pass me,” said Vuerinckx. “It’s a shame, but I believe fifth place was the best I could have done, so I’m satisfied.”
