Development Sports Director Wesley Van Speybroeck looks ahead to the Ronde de l'Oise: "A race where our riders can learn a lot"

The Ronde de l'Oise marks an important four-day stage race for Lotto-Groupe Wanty. The race gets underway on Thursday with a stage from Beauvais to Clermont. Sports Director Wesley Van Speybroeck looks ahead to what he believes is an ideal opportunity for the team’s young riders to gain experience.

“It's obviously an important race,” he explains. “It's a UCI event featuring strong development teams such as Lidl-Trek, Tudor and EF. It's also exactly the type of stage race our riders need to experience. There are short climbs, the possibility of crosswinds and a route that is reminiscent of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque at professional level. It's important that they gain experience in these kinds of races.”

Lotto-Groupe Wanty heads to Northern France with a versatile line-up. “We have a strong team for this type of race. For the sprint, we can rely on riders such as Mathias De Keersmaeker and Keije Solen. In an aggressive race or on the more demanding sections, Tars Poelvoorde and Samuel Greenwell will have their opportunities. Witse Bertels is also returning after a saddle injury, while Thibaut Bernard normally takes on the lead-out role but is himself in excellent form. As you can see, we have plenty of options and everyone will get the chance to show themselves.”

The opening stage from Beauvais to Clermont could already prove decisive for the general classification. “In my opinion, it's the key stage of this Ronde de l'Oise. The riders face a demanding finale and crosswinds could also play a major role. It will be important to stay attentive from the start and to be well positioned on the climbs.”

Although the team heads into the race with GC ambitions, Van Speybroeck is not yet naming a clear leader. “We start the race with ambitions for the general classification, but it's difficult to single out one rider beforehand. After the first stage, things will already become much clearer, so we'll wait and see.”
