Ladies Sports director Grace Verbeke looks ahead to the Baloise Ladies Tour
"In terms of difficulty and the level of the field, this edition is very similar to previous years," says Verbeke. "We are heading slightly further east, with stages in places such as Maaseik and Mechelen, but the courses there are not significantly more difficult. The key stages will be the individual time trial and the stage to Zulte. That stage heads towards the Flemish Ardennes and could create some gaps. On the other hand, if there is little wind and the race does not split apart, a bunch sprint is once again a real possibility. We are hoping for an attractive race in which we can show ourselves. Overall, it is a stage race that offers opportunities for sprinters, rouleurs and time trial specialists."
According to Verbeke, the team has selected a squad that perfectly suits the nature of the race. "These are mainly riders who know how to position themselves well in the peloton. That is essential in the chaos and intensity leading into a sprint."
Lotto-Intermarché Ladies also have several options for the sprint finishes. "Both Sandrine Tas and Katrijn De Clercq have the speed to play an important role. The other four riders can also show themselves in different ways and will play an important role in the lead-up to the sprint. Sandrine Tas is also a strong time triallist, while Sterre Vervloet is also very capable against the clock. For both of them, it will be interesting to see where they stand in this field during the time trial."
The sports director is looking forward to the five-day stage race with confidence, encouraged by the team's recent performances. "The group lining up this week is, of course, different from the one that raced in Portugal and achieved some great results. This selection is better suited to Belgian races such as this stage race. I'm very curious to see what these riders can do on this course. I hope we can continue our team's strong run of performances."
Lotto-Intermarché Ladies will line up in IJzendijke with Julie Brouwers, Katrijn De Clercq, Sandrine Tas, Lea Lin Teutenberg, Sterre Vervloet and Lani Wittevrongel.
