ProTeam Lennert Van Eetvelt wins final stage and overall classification at Tour of Slovakia

Lennert Van Eetvelt has successfully defended his yellow leader’s jersey at the Tour of Slovakia: after taking the overall lead with his victory on stage three earlier this week, he also won today’s final stage to secure the overall victory. “We came here with a very young team and I’m really happy that I could reward all their hard work like this”, says Van Eetvelt.

“I’m super happy to finish it off like this”, says a delighted Lennert Van Eetvelt. Earlier this week, he took his first victory in almost two years and now, two days later, he immediately adds another one. Van Eetvelt started in Sliač with a small advantage in the general classification, but the uphill finish – 13 kilometres at an average gradient of just under 9 percent – was perfectly suited to the Lotto-Intermarché Belgian. On the final climb, Ireland’s Jamie Meehan and Brazil’s Henrique Bravo repeatedly tried to put Van Eetvelt under pressure. “I had the strongest guys with me, that’s a fact. Sports director Maxime Bouet kept telling me to stay with them and gamble on the sprint. It’s always exciting, of course. You’re never sure until you cross the finish line. There was also a lot of wind towards the top.”

Van Eetvelt eventually sprinted away from Bravo to take his second victory of the week. “I won’t forget this one anytime soon. With Duarte Marivoet, Lucas Van Gils, Milan Donie, Samuel Greenwell and Maxence Place, Liam Slock and I came here with a super young team. Everyone worked so hard, so it makes me even happier that I was able to finish it off for them.”
