ProTeam Jenno Berckmoes and Lionel Taminiaux share the podium in Binche: “A great day for the team”
“Second and third, together on the podium… that’s a first for us,” Jenno Berckmoes and Lionel Taminiaux laugh after Binche-Chimay-Binche. “First and second would obviously have been even better. But beating Paul Magnier probably wasn’t going to happen today. We had already spent a bit too much energy during the race when a group went clear and we weren’t represented at the front.”
Nevertheless, Taminiaux and Berckmoes look back on a great day of racing in Binche, thanks to a blistering acceleration from Taminiaux on the cobbles of the Rue de la Pépinière. Berckmoes was able to follow, as was Magnier, while a gap opened behind them. “What Taminiaux did there was really impressive. He was super strong today. We’re very good friends, so I’m really happy that we can stand on the podium together today. First and second would indeed have been even better, but we’re not going to let that spoil the moment. Jasper De Buyst rode the final race of his career here in Binche today. He has been very important to the team and I’m very proud that we could do this for him today. With Jarno (Widar, ed.) winning in Italy and Linda (Riedmann) winning the women’s race, it makes the celebrations complete. This is a great day for the team.”
