After less than ten kilometers into the race in Pérenchies, a breakaway group of eleven riders, including Steffen De Schuyteneer, took off. Lap after lap, the group saw their lead grow, and the peloton never returned. "In the end, we rode 172 kilometers in the attack," De Schuyteneer recounts. "In the finale, I wanted to react to an attack by some riders, but in the end, it was the Frenchman Théo Delacroix who managed to get away. The riders behind, including myself, unfortunately looked to each other too much at that moment. On the cobblestone section, we tried to bridge the gap, but by then it was already too late. The gap was too big, and I had to settle for second place."
