Ladies Anna Van Wersch sprints convincingly to second place in the GP Beerens

Anna Van Wersch (23) secured a notable second place in the Grote Prijs Beerens. "I waited quite a while before making my move, but I’m happy that I could sprint convincingly to that second spot."
Race 01 September 2024
With temperatures soaring above thirty degrees and a challenging course around Hoboken and Aartselaar in Antwerp, the GP Beerens was a tough race. The women had to complete six local laps of 22 kilometers each, including the climb of De Schorre. However, just like in previous editions, which typically ended in a bunch sprint, this year’s race followed the same pattern. This was ideal for Anna Van Wersch. "Halfway through the race, the peloton split on De Schorre," she said. "I positioned myself well in a group of 24 after the team had kept me at the front throughout the first part of the race."

"I tried to save as much energy as possible in the leading group for the finale. Since I didn’t have any teammates with me, I had that 'luxury'. In the end, I was able to position myself well for the final sprint. I waited quite a while before launching, but I made sure not to get boxed in. That allowed me to start my sprint freely from the right side. Sofie Van Rooijen, who would eventually win the race, had already opened a small gap, making it tough to catch her, unfortunately. But I managed to keep the rest at bike-length distance, securing a convincing second place that I’m very pleased with."
