Development Jarno Widar ready for his season debut: “I’m really looking forward to it”
Despite the strong competition, Widar is fully committed to making the most of his debut: “These races suit me well. Positioning is always key heading into the final climbs, and this time will be no different. It’s hard to set a specific result as a goal, since the first races of the season always bring some uncertainty. But if I give it my all and know I left nothing on the table, I’ll be satisfied.”
Sports director Wesley Van Speybroeck is confident about a strong start to the season but emphasizes that there’s no pressure. “The first three races all feature summit finishes, making them a perfect fit for Jarno,” he explains. The Classic Var features a short but explosive final climb (1.4 km at 11.2%)—a different challenge from the longer climbs he usually excels on. “But we know what he’s capable of. However, we’re not putting any pressure on him—this is his first race of the season, and the main goal is for him to feel good and gain experience.”
While the Classic Var will be a valuable first test, the real opportunities may lie in the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes. “The Tour des Alpes-Maritimes will suit him even better. Actually, that works out quite well. He can use the Classic Var to get back into rhythm,” says Van Speybroeck.
