Algemeen Staff Stories – Nutritionist Louise Macken: “In recent years, it’s become clear just how crucial nutrition is in modern cycling.”
Louise is one of the driving forces behind the team’s nutrition strategy — a vital link in a world where every detail matters. But her path to the peloton didn’t start on the bike; it began in the auditoriums of KU Leuven. “I initially did a Master’s degree in Sport and Movement Sciences, but I missed the nutrition component. That’s why I decided to take a shortened Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, followed by additional training in sports nutrition and skinfold measurements. That’s when I knew I wanted to apply my expertise in nutrition within a sports team.”
After a stopover at Energy Lab, she eventually joined Lotto Cycling Team via coach Jeroen Dingemans.“When a position opened up for a dietitian within the team, I didn’t hesitate for a second,” she says with a smile. “I’d always had the ambition to work in a cycling team. In recent years, it’s become clear just how crucial nutrition is in modern cycling, and that fascinates me.”
Even though Louise only joined the team fairly recently, she doesn’t have to think long when asked about her favorite moment so far. “My first races with the team were very special. But if I had to pick just one: the Tour of Flanders. That’s truly a highlight in the cycling calendar. Everything I used to watch on TV with my dad as a kid — I suddenly experienced it all from the front row.”
What does Louise love most about her job? “The variety and the human connection,” she says without hesitation. “You’re constantly interacting with riders, fellow dietitians, as well as soigneurs, chefs, and sports directors during races. Everyone brings their own expertise to the table, and together we do our best to align everything with what the riders need.” That connection with the riders is something Louise finds especially rewarding. “It’s great to work with professionals who are so focused on their performance, yet still open to guidance. That makes the job even more interesting.”
She still has plenty of dreams for the future. “Being part of a victory in a WorldTour race or a Grand Tour like the Tour de France or the Vuelta — that would be the ultimate highlight for me.” Until that day comes, she continues to give her all for the team with just as much passion and dedication.
