Development Jarno Widar makes it three out of three and wins overall classification at Giro della Valle d’Aosta
With more than a three-minute lead in the general classification, not much could go wrong for the 19-year-old on the final day of the prestigious Giro della Valle d’Aosta. The challenging mountain stage of nearly 120 kilometres, finishing atop Breuil Cervinia, suited Widar perfectly. Alongside two breakaway companions, he reached the summit and then launched a long sprint to take his third stage win in a row.
“Cycling isn’t always a beautiful sport,” said Jarno Widar, who had already dedicated his previous wins to Samuele Privitera, the young rider who tragically passed away after crashing during the first stage. “It’s been a tough edition this year. I tried to make the most of it, and I’m happy I was able to finish it off today.”
The Giro della Valle d’Aosta was Widar’s final race of the season in Lotto colours. In a few weeks, he’ll line up with the national team for the Tour de l’Avenir and the national championships. “I’ll head home for two days now, and then leave for a three-week altitude camp in Andorra — hopefully to perform well at L’Avenir.”
