Ladies Sandrine Tas claims first victory in Brittany

Sandrine Tas has secured her first victory! Just three months after competing at the Olympic Winter Games- still as a speed skater at the time- she sprinted to a dominant win yesterday in the opening stage of the Bretagne Ladies Tour. Today, she followed that up with a sixth-place finish in the individual time trial and now sits second in the overall standings.

Only three months ago, Tas hung up her skates and fully committed to cycling. Yesterday, she celebrated her first win on two wheels. In a sprint from a reduced group, she proved the strongest by far in the opening stage of the Bretagne Ladies Tour, from Ploemeur to Plouay. The victory also earned her the race leader’s jersey. “I knew beforehand that this was a stage that suited me,” Tas explained. “We were never really in trouble throughout the race, and our team stayed attentive at the front all day. I know I have a strong sprint, and if I can unleash it properly, I can be right up there. I started my sprint just a little too early, but I never faded. Amalie Dideriksen came alongside me, but she never managed to pass me.”

Tas is especially pleased with her first victory. Just two weeks ago, she impressed by sprinting to third place behind Lorena Wiebes and Charlotte Kool at the Simac Omloop der Kempen. Now, she has earned another reward for the hard work she has put in over the past months. “Omloop der Kempen was completely different from this stage,” she said. “That race was flat as a pancake and against the best sprinters in the world. Here, I first had to survive 110 kilometers with quite a bit of climbing before I could even think about sprinting. It was only in the final lap, when I felt I still had something left in my legs, that I started thinking about how I would approach the sprint.”

Today’s stage of the Bretagne Ladies Tour featured a 25-kilometer individual time trial, where Tas once again delivered a strong performance by finishing sixth. “It wasn’t my very best time trial. Because of the heat, I struggled to really push myself to the limit. Still, I learned a lot ahead of the Belgian National Time Trial Championships, where I’ll also be competing. And in the end, sixth place is a result I’m happy with.”

As a result, Tas drops one position in the general classification and relinquishes the leader’s jersey she won yesterday to Jasmin Liechti. “There are still quite a few riders close behind who may start attacking tomorrow,” she said. “Bonifications alone won’t be enough for me. If I want to win the overall classification, I’ll probably have to go on the attack myself, and I’m not sure how realistic that will be. But if the others make the race hard and I can play it smart, a lot can happen. I also still have the points jersey to defend, so the priority now is to eat and sleep as much as possible tonight and then see what kind of legs I wake up with tomorrow.”
