Ladies Silver Medal for Sandrine Tas at the Belgian Time Trial Championships

Sandrine Tas claimed the silver medal at the Belgian Time Trial Championships in Maarkedal. After racing in extremely challenging weather conditions, Tas was only beaten by Lotte Claes, finishing just thirteen seconds behind the new Belgian champion. Due to the exceptional heat, the start times were delayed, but even the tropical temperatures could not stop Tas. “I gave everything until the finish line, and I'm very proud of the result.”

Tas made a very strong start to her time trial. “I think I may have started just a little too fast,” she said. “I believe I was the fastest at the first intermediate checkpoint, but after that I gradually lost time and noticed my power numbers starting to drop.” The impact of the extreme heat was immediately evident after the finish. “I'm feeling pretty unwell right now, but I'm really happy with my medal. It was incredibly hot, so I'm a bit nauseous at the moment, but that will pass.”

Tas had specifically targeted the Belgian Championships over the past few weeks. “Two years ago, when I was still racing as an elite rider without a professional contract, I already set a strong time compared to the pros. I really prepared for this race. At the beginning of the week, when I saw it was going to be around 35 degrees, I did wonder how I would cope. I know I don't perform particularly well in the heat because I'm a former speed skater. But we had a good plan, and I executed it as well as I could. I'm very happy it paid off.”

The former Olympic speed skater once again proved that switching to cycling was the right decision. “I thought very carefully about making the transition. It wasn't an impulsive decision. Everything is based on my love for cycling. I feel honoured to have the opportunity to chase that dream. So far, it's going even better than I expected.”
