Ladies Sandrine Tas caps off strong Belgian Championships weekend with bronze medal
Before the decisive sprint finish, Tas tried her luck in a promising breakaway with Fleur Moors and Justine Ghekiere. “I had just come out of that breakaway, so my legs were not 100% fresh for the sprint. I managed to come from behind with some extra speed, but I was just a little too far from the finish line. I hesitated for a fraction of a second, which meant I started my sprint just a little too late.”
In the decisive sprint, Tas found herself slightly boxed in. “Shari Bossuyt was positioned diagonally in front of me and carefully closed the gap. That’s racing. I had to sit up, shift gears and start accelerating again. At that point, it’s basically over. You are simply too late. It is a bit of a disappointing feeling, but on the other hand I am happy with the bronze medal.”
With a silver medal in the time trial and a bronze medal in the road race, Tas can look back on a strong Belgian Championships. It was also her first Belgian Road Championships as a professional rider. “A lot of riders would dream of standing on the podium alongside Lotte Kopecky and winner Shari Bossuyt, so of course I am happy with that. I came here to compete for the Belgian title, and I did that in the end.”
